Joshua at Engadget had the opportunity to chat with Microsoft’s VP Joe Belfiore about the upcoming launch of Windows Phone 7 and in particular about some of the features currently missing from the new OS (mainly Multi-tasking). There isn’t anything new to learn but it always good to see one of the company’s top head explain why things have been done in a certain way. We’ve known for a while that WP7 won’t have Copy/paste at launch, same for Third-Party apps multi-tasking support but Joe is right in saying that the iPhone has been successful without all of those features and WP7, as a first release, packs services and other features that aren’t available on competing platforms (Zune , XBOX Live, SharePoint, Office etc..).

The Problem for Microsoft is more of a PR and Marketing issue than a fundamental technical flaw or issue. Like I said earlier about today’s previews: the Windows Phone 7 preview handsets should only be compared to iPhones and android handsets that have no third-party apps installed (vanilla OS vs vanilla OS).  You’ll then realize that Microsoft’s platform has a lot to offer despite some of its shortcomings. As I’ve always said: Applications are the key to the platform’s success that’s why MS is working hard on evangelizing the OS all over the world. Personally the only feature that I will really miss (and that’s kind of a deal breaker) is the lack of tethering support (yes you heard that right..). We will see how things turn out on October 7th…Watch the 12 minutes long interview after the break:
