Microsoft has just posted some more information on the infamous Windows Phone 7 update issue affecting the Samsung Omnia 7 and Focus devices. Unfortunately you won’t learn anything new as this whole blog post seems to be a PR damage control statement more than anything else. The company is still claiming that the update has been suspended for Samsung devices even though this isn’t true (yes, my Omnia7 is still getting prompted to update every time I plug it into a PC) UPDATE: My Omnia 7 is finally no loner promted to update.
•90 percent of people who’ve received an update notification have installed the new software patch successfully. (So when your turn to download it arrives, chances are good this will be a non-event.)
•Of the 10 percent who did experience a problem, nearly half failed for two basic reasons—a bad Internet connection or insufficient computer storage space. Luckily, both are easy to fix.
As you can see in the statement above; the vast majority of the failed updates (of the 10%) are apparently caused by lack of HD space or proper internet connectivity. This is a weird way to count failures given that a user can’t even start the update process if he doesn’t have an internet connection or enough HD space for the recovery backup. To me, a failed update is when the process has actually started and then failed to accomplish all the required steps. But like I said today’s statement is just PR damage control in my opinion.
Anyway, if you are a Samsung Omnia 7 or Focus owner who can’t apply the update, your only solution is wait for the fix or just hard reset your device and then start the update process (if your really want to update even though the 7008 OS version doesn’t bring anything to to the table). But frankly you aren’t missing much given that the 7008update doesn’t bring anything new at all.
