Smart displays have earned their place on the kitchen counter. They play music, show recipes, make video calls, and control your smart home, all without you picking up your phone with flour-covered hands. But which one deserves that prime countertop real estate? The Amazon Echo Show 15 and the Google Nest Hub Max are the two heavyweights in this space, and they take noticeably different approaches to being your kitchen companion.

We have spent weeks with both devices, and here is our full breakdown to help you decide which belongs in your home.

Display Size and Quality

The Echo Show 15 features a 15.6-inch Full HD (1920×1080) display that can be mounted on the wall or placed on a stand. The second-generation 2024 refresh added Fire TV integration, better speakers, Wi-Fi 6E and Thread/Matter support. The screen is designed to double as a digital photo frame or family dashboard when not in active use. The sheer size makes it excellent for following recipe videos or monitoring multiple smart home camera feeds.

The Nest Hub Max, by contrast, has a 10-inch 1280×800 display. It is noticeably smaller, which means it takes up less counter space but also limits the screen real estate for multitasking. Colours are vibrant on both, though the Echo Show 15’s larger panel makes a more immediate visual impact. If screen size matters to you, and in the kitchen it often does, Amazon wins this round comfortably.

Camera and Video Calls

The Echo Show 15 (second-gen) houses a 13.3MP camera with automatic tracking, which is a notable step up from the 5MP camera in the original 2021 model. Calls run through Alexa and you can drop in to any Echo device in your household.

The Nest Hub Max has a 6.5MP Nest Cam with a 127-degree field of view built directly into the device. That camera doubles as a Nest security camera when you are out of the house, complete with motion detection and person recognition. Video calls run through Google Meet. If you already have Nest cameras throughout your home, the seamless integration is hard to beat.

Recipes and Kitchen Use

Recipe content favours Google. The Nest Hub Max pulls step-by-step recipes from Food Network, SideChef and allrecipes, and Google Assistant handles follow-up voice questions (“how many grams is half a cup?”) more naturally than Alexa still does in 2026. The Echo Show 15 has a decent recipe library too, with partnerships including BBC Good Food in the UK and Tasty from BuzzFeed, but step navigation is more screen-driven than voice-driven.

Smart Home Dashboard

The Nest Hub Max offers smart home controls through the Google Home app, and it works seamlessly with Google Home’s Gemini-powered features. You can view camera feeds, control lights, adjust thermostats, and trigger routines. However, the interface is less customisable than the Echo Show 15’s widget approach. If you want a dedicated smart home dashboard, Amazon has done a better job here.

Photo Frame Mode

The Echo Show 15’s sheer screen size makes it an excellent digital picture frame. It pulls from Amazon Photos or a synced Facebook album and rotates shots on a schedule you control. The Nest Hub Max uses on-device machine learning to curate your best shots from Google Photos. If your photo library lives in Google Photos, the automatic curation is a genuine delight, surfacing photos you have forgotten about while skipping blurry or duplicate images. The smaller screen limits the visual impact, but the intelligence behind the curation is superior.

Speaker Quality

Neither device will replace a dedicated speaker, but both are respectable for kitchen listening. The Echo Show 15 (second-gen) uses an upgraded stereo speaker array that produces clear audio suitable for podcasts, morning news briefings, and casual music listening. The Nest Hub Max has dual 10W full-range drivers, delivering slightly fuller sound with better bass response. For kitchen music, the Nest Hub Max sounds a touch better, though pairing either with a whole-home speaker setup is the real solution.

Kids Features

Both platforms support kid-friendly content. Amazon has the edge with its Kids+ subscription, offering visual content, games, and educational Alexa skills purpose-built for children. Parental controls on the Echo Show 15 are robust, and you can set up multi-user profiles that switch kids into a walled-garden mode.

Google offers YouTube Kids integration and Family Link parental controls, plus the Nest Hub Max can recognise individual faces via Voice Match/Face Match and tailor responses accordingly. Amazon’s kid ecosystem is more developed, but Google’s face recognition adds a personal touch that children enjoy.

Privacy Considerations

Both devices have physical camera shutters, which is essential for any device with a camera in your kitchen. Amazon and Google both allow you to review and delete voice recordings. The Nest Hub Max’s camera doubling as a security camera means it is designed to be always watching when you leave the house, which is either a benefit or a concern depending on your perspective. The Echo Show 15’s camera is less aggressive in its default behaviour.

Which Should You Buy?

The honest answer is that your existing ecosystem should drive this decision. If you already use Alexa devices, Ring cameras, and Amazon services, the Echo Show 15 is the obvious choice. Its large display, widget dashboard, and deep Alexa integration make it the best smart home command centre available. Check out our guide to Alexa routines to get the most from it.

If you are invested in Google’s ecosystem (Nest cameras, Google Photos, Gmail, Google Calendar), the Nest Hub Max is the smarter pick. Its superior recipe search, built-in Nest Cam functionality, and Google Assistant’s contextual understanding make it genuinely useful in daily life.

For those starting fresh with no ecosystem loyalty, the Echo Show 15 offers more screen and more flexibility. But the Nest Hub Max’s tighter integration with Google’s smart home vision makes it the more cohesive product overall. Either way, a smart display in the kitchen is one of those purchases that quickly becomes indispensable.
