Apple now sells two AirPods models with active noise cancellation: the AirPods 4 with ANC and the AirPods Pro 3. Both cancel noise, both run on Apple’s H2 chip, and both work seamlessly with iPhones. The price gap is real but not huge at roughly £40 in the UK, so the question is straightforward: is the AirPods Pro 3 worth the premium, or can most people save money with the AirPods 4 ANC and not miss anything important?

Design and Fit: Open vs Sealed

This is the fundamental difference between the two, and it affects everything else.

The AirPods 4 ANC use an open-ear design, no silicone ear tips, no seal in the ear canal. They sit in the outer ear like the original AirPods, relying on their shape to stay put. This makes them extremely comfortable for extended wear and means you retain some ambient awareness even with ANC off. The trade-off is that noise cancellation cannot be as effective without a physical seal.

The AirPods Pro 3 use silicone ear tips that create a seal in the ear canal. This sealed design is essential for maximum noise cancellation and also provides significantly better bass response. Apple includes four tip sizes (XS, S, M, L), and the Ear Tip Fit Test in Settings helps you find the right size. The sealed fit is less comfortable for some people, particularly during very long listening sessions.

If you dislike the feeling of in-ear earbuds, that plugged-up sensation, the AirPods 4 are the obvious choice regardless of other features. If noise cancellation effectiveness is your priority, the sealed Pro 3 design wins convincingly.

Noise Cancellation Quality

The AirPods 4 ANC reduces ambient noise noticeably, office chatter becomes a murmur, traffic noise drops considerably, and aeroplane cabin noise is reduced. But without a physical seal, low-frequency rumble (engines, air conditioning) leaks through more than with sealed earbuds. Apple has done remarkable work making open-ear ANC effective, but physics imposes limits.

The AirPods Pro 3 offer substantially stronger noise cancellation. The sealed fit blocks passive noise before the ANC even activates, and Apple’s H2 chip processing removes what gets through. On a train, plane, or in a noisy office, the Pro 3 creates near-silence. Adaptive Transparency is also more effective on the Pro 3, letting you hear conversations and announcements while still reducing harsh noise.

Sound Quality

The AirPods Pro 3 deliver the most obvious sound quality step up thanks to the sealed in-ear design. Bass response is punchy and controlled, the soundstage feels wider, and Personalised Spatial Audio with head tracking is noticeably more convincing. The Pro 3 also brings Apple’s Hearing Health suite, including a clinical-grade hearing test and a software hearing aid mode that works with mild to moderate hearing loss, confirmed on Apple’s UK Hearing Health page.

The AirPods 4 ANC do not include the hearing test or hearing aid functionality. They do include the hearing protection feature (Loud Sound Reduction), but the core hearing health capabilities are exclusive to the Pro line.

If hearing health features matter to you, or if you have mild hearing loss and want to use your earbuds as a hearing aid, the Pro 3 is the only option. This alone justifies the premium for some buyers.

Battery Life and Charging Case

The AirPods 4 ANC offer approximately 4 hours of listening with ANC on (5 hours with ANC off) and 30 hours total with the charging case, per Apple’s official AirPods 4 specs. The case charges via USB-C and supports Qi wireless charging but not MagSafe.

The AirPods Pro 3 provide around 6 hours of listening with ANC on and 30 hours total with the case. The Pro 3 case adds a built-in speaker for Find My alerts, a lanyard loop, and supports MagSafe, Apple Watch charger, and Qi2 wireless charging, more charging flexibility than the AirPods 4 case.

The battery life difference is modest (one hour), but the Pro 3’s case is objectively more feature-rich and easier to locate if misplaced.

Price Comparison

The AirPods 4 with ANC retail at £179 in the UK. The AirPods Pro 3 retail at £219 direct from Apple UK. That is roughly a £40 gap, noticeable but not enormous.

It is worth noting that the standard AirPods 4 (without ANC) retail at £129, so if noise cancellation is not essential, there is an even more affordable option. Who Should Buy the AirPods 4 ANC?

The AirPods 4 ANC are the right choice if you prefer the open-ear design and find in-ear earbuds uncomfortable. They are also a good pick if you want noise cancellation for office and home use rather than loud commuting environments, if you primarily listen to podcasts and phone calls rather than music, and if you want to save £50 to £70 without losing the Apple ecosystem benefits.

Who Should Buy the AirPods Pro 3?

The AirPods Pro 3 are worth the premium if you commute on public transport or fly regularly and need strong noise cancellation. They are essential if you want Apple’s hearing health features (hearing test, hearing aid functionality). They are the better choice if sound quality for music listening is important to you, and if you want the best Adaptive Transparency for situational awareness.

The Verdict

For most iPhone users, the AirPods Pro 3 remain the better buy. The stronger noise cancellation, better sound quality, and hearing health features justify the price difference. But the AirPods 4 ANC are not a compromise, they are a genuinely good product that suits people who prioritise comfort and open-ear design over maximum noise cancellation. Try both if you can: the fit preference is personal and will likely make the decision for you. For more on what spatial audio adds to the experience, see our spatial audio explainer.
