If you own an Android phone, your smartwatch choice has never been better, or more confusing. Google’s Pixel Watch 3 and Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 7 both run Wear OS, both track fitness, and both look genuinely good on the wrist. But beneath the surface, these are quite different watches with different philosophies. Here is how they compare across everything that matters, and which one deserves your money.

Design and Build

The Pixel Watch 3 comes in two sizes, 41mm and 45mm, with a distinctive domed glass design that curves seamlessly into the aluminium case. It is a beautiful watch, arguably the most elegant Android smartwatch ever made, but that dome does make it prone to reflections in bright sunlight. The lack of a flat bezel also means there is no protective lip around the glass.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 7 takes a more conventional approach with a flatter display and a slightly more angular case design. It is available in 40mm and 44mm sizes, with an aluminium body and Sapphire Crystal glass. It feels more rugged and practical, though perhaps less eye-catching. The flatter screen is easier to read outdoors and less likely to catch scratches on door frames.

Software: Stock Wear OS vs One UI Watch

The Pixel Watch 3 runs near-stock Wear OS with Google’s refinements: clean typography, tight integration with Gmail, Calendar, Keep and Fitbit’s health platform, and a UI that feels like it was built by Google’s own designers rather than bolted on.

The Galaxy Watch 7 runs Samsung’s One UI Watch 6 on top of Wear OS 5. Samsung’s overlay adds substantial functionality such as a more customisable watch face system, Samsung Health with its own ecosystem of features, and tight integration with other Galaxy devices. However, it also adds complexity. There are two app stores (Google Play and Galaxy Store), two health platforms (Google Fit and Samsung Health), and two voice assistants (Google Assistant and Bixby). Some users appreciate the options; others find it cluttered.

If you value simplicity and a clean experience, the Pixel Watch wins. If you want maximum customisation and do not mind navigating Samsung’s layers, the Galaxy Watch offers more flexibility.

Health and Fitness Tracking

Both watches feature comprehensive health monitoring suites, but they approach fitness differently. The Pixel Watch 3 leans on Fitbit’s platform for daily readiness, stress scores, cycle tracking and sleep profiles, plus ECG, loss-of-pulse detection, and a new auto-start running workout with cadence and ground-contact analysis. The Galaxy Watch 7’s new BioActive sensor (with 13 heart-rate LEDs versus the Watch 6’s six) powers ECG, SpO2, skin temperature and blood pressure monitoring where approved, with detailed sleep coaching and body composition analysis via Samsung Health.

Battery Life

Battery is where the Galaxy Watch 7 has a quiet edge. Samsung rates the Watch 7 at up to 40 hours with always-on display off. The Pixel Watch 3’s 45mm model is rated for up to 48 hours with Battery Saver mode or around 36 hours in normal use with always-on display off, while the 41mm version stretches to about 24 hours. Charging on the Pixel Watch 3 is faster than its predecessor, reaching around 50 per cent in about 30 minutes, but you will likely be reaching for the charger more often than a Galaxy Watch 7 owner.

If battery anxiety is a deal-breaker, Samsung edges this round. The Pixel Watch 3 is adequate for daily use but requires more disciplined charging habits.

Third-Party Apps and Ecosystem

Both watches run Wear OS, so the core app library is identical. Strava, Spotify, Google Maps, WhatsApp, and most major apps work on both. However, Samsung’s Galaxy Watch has a slight advantage in app availability thanks to the Galaxy Store offering Samsung-exclusive apps alongside the Google Play selection.

The Pixel Watch 3 integrates more naturally with Google’s ecosystem. Gmail notifications are richer, Google Calendar is more responsive, and Google Home controls work seamlessly for smart home management. If your life revolves around Google services, the Pixel Watch feels like it was designed specifically for you.

Samsung’s watch pairs best with Galaxy phones, offering features like Samsung Wallet, SmartThings integration, and the ability to use the watch as a camera remote. Some Galaxy-exclusive features do not work on non-Samsung Android phones, which is worth noting.

Google Assistant vs Bixby

This one is straightforward. Google Assistant is better than Bixby in virtually every measurable way. It understands natural language more accurately, provides more useful responses, and integrates with more third-party services. The Pixel Watch 3 runs Assistant natively and flawlessly.

The Galaxy Watch 7 defaults to Bixby but also supports Google Assistant. In practice, most Galaxy Watch users switch to Assistant immediately and never look back. Samsung continues to push Bixby, but the gap in capability is significant enough that this should not be a deciding factor; just plan to use Assistant on either watch.

Pricing and Value

The Galaxy Watch 7 starts at around £289 for the 40mm model and £319 for the 44mm. The Pixel Watch 3 starts at £349 for the 41mm and £399 for the 45mm. LTE variants add around £100 on the Pixel Watch 3 and around £50 on the Galaxy Watch 7. Samsung offers better value at every size, especially when you factor in battery life.

The Verdict

If you own a Samsung Galaxy phone, buy the Galaxy Watch 7. The ecosystem integration is excellent, the battery life is superior, and you save money. For those who compared the Apple Watch and Garmin options, Samsung represents the strongest Android alternative for fitness-focused users.

If you own a Pixel phone or any other Android device and value a clean, Google-native experience, the Pixel Watch 3 is the better choice. Its design is more refined, the software is more elegant, and Google Assistant integration is seamless. You pay more and get less battery life, but the user experience is genuinely superior.

Both are excellent smartwatches. The right choice depends on which phone is already in your pocket.
