Windows Phone 8 can’t come soon enough for Nokia given that the company has announced today in its Q2 2012 earnings financial earnings that only 4 Million Lumia handsets have been sold world in the last 3 months in addition to the 3 millions already sold since November. What’s more worrying though is that only 600 000 have been sold in the US despite the gigantic marketing campaign that helped launch the Lumia 900.
this shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody who’s been closely following the situation. Current Windows Phone handsets simply can’t compete on a hardware basis against most mid-range and high-end Android handsets (I’m not talking about the user experience here which I think is superior on WP7) and the total lack of communication from Microsoft regarding the Windows Phone 8 upgrade path obviously didn’t help the situation. Last month’s Windows Phone 8 and 7.8 announcements finally set the record straight but was also the last nail in the coffin for the Windows Phone 7.X platform which will be reaching EOL (End Of Life) once Windows Phone 8 launches around November.
You all may have noticed that I haven’t been posting a whole lately and the reason is simply that there’s nothing really interesting to talk about now that we know the the current windows phone 7.X platform/handsets will become legacy in a few months. Things are going to ramp up in the weeks to come when Microsoft starts to unveil some of the new Windows Phone 8 consumer features before the OS hit’s RTM around September. OEMs will only announce their handsets afterwards. Also keep in mind that Windows 8 will launch on October 26th so Microsoft will obviously try to focus everybody’s attention on their Flagship OS and then revert back to Windows Phone 8 shortly after so we can expect the first device in November.
