Today Motorola held their Android event in San Fransisco to announce their first Android based devices the CLIQ which sports their homemade skin/UI called Motorola Blur.
The Motorola CLIQ
First of let’s start with the hardware. Hands-on reports say that it feels real good in the hand and look quite a bit better in real life compared to the photos. Well that’s good cause the specs are what bothers me the most (I’ll talk about the software later). It’s the same old stuff with be getting from several ODM/OEMs (mainly HTC) for the past several years. You are getting the same old Qualcomm MSM 7200A chipset that powers 100% of all the Android phones and nearly 90% of the Windows Mobile phones. The same HQVGA resolution, a 3.1″ capacitive touch screen, the same amount of RAM as on the HTC Hero, a slide-out qwerty keyboard, 3.5mm jack and 5mpx camera. Motorola BLUR
Now let’s talk about the software. Thankfully were are getting something interesting called Motorola BLUR. But is it something really new? Well, not exactly. It’s basically what you already get with HTC’s Sense UI on their latest android phones (and People Centric Communication on the WinMo devices) and Palm’s WebOS Synergy. The implementation looks really good though. Maybe even more functional than HTC’s or Palm’s. You can check it out here
Once again the ball is now in Microsoft’s camp, as all these social/contacts/synergy features where (and are still AFAIK) natively part of Windows Mobile 7. And if you remember (a couple of them used to work for Moto on WM7) , Motorola was one of the biggest MS partner and working really closely on WM7, but because of the constant delays they decided to focus on Android.
Android is getting bigger and that’s good for the us and for the competition. The Motorola CLIQ should be available on T-Mobile in time before the holidays for free on contract according to this :
