AirPods Pro 3 vs AirPods 4: which to buy in the UK

AirPods Pro 3 vs AirPods 4: at £219 against £119, we compare ANC, health, battery and price, then name the Apple earbuds UK buyers should actually choose.

AirPods Pro 3 vs AirPods 4 is the only earbuds decision most UK Apple users actually need to make in 2026, and the £100 gap between them hides a bigger difference than the names suggest. Apple positions the AirPods Pro 3 as its flagship in-ear pair, while AirPods 4 is the open-ear range that now, unusually, also does noise cancelling.

Key facts
  • AirPods Pro 3 is £219; AirPods 4 is £119, or £169 with Active Noise Cancellation (Apple UK).
  • Both run Apple’s H2 chip; only AirPods Pro 3 has sealed in-ear tips, a heart rate sensor and the Hearing Aid feature.
  • AirPods 4 uses an open-ear design with no tips, and was the first open-ear AirPods to add ANC.
  • For most UK buyers this is a sealed-versus-open comfort decision before it is a price one.

AirPods Pro 3 vs AirPods 4: the real difference

The AirPods Pro 3 vs AirPods 4 question is decided by fit before anything else. AirPods Pro 3 use sealed silicone tips in five sizes, from XXS to L, which is what lets Apple claim the world’s best in-ear Active Noise Cancellation, up to two times more than AirPods Pro 2 and four times more than the original AirPods Pro. AirPods 4 keep the classic open hard-shell shape with no tips, so they sit in the ear rather than seal it. Apple did bring ANC to that open design for the first time, and its own line, “the most advanced audio experience ever in an open-ear design,” is accurate, but open-ear ANC physically cannot match a sealed tip.

If you hate the plugged-up feeling of sealed tips, that single sentence ends the AirPods Pro 3 vs AirPods 4 debate in favour of AirPods 4, regardless of price. Everyone else should read on, because the Pro adds far more than noise cancelling, a point we also made in our AirPods Pro 3 hearing aid guide.

Health and features: where AirPods Pro 3 pulls ahead

This is the part the names hide. AirPods Pro 3 add a custom heart rate sensor that pulses infrared light 256 times a second and supports up to 50 workout types, plus the Hearing Aid feature and Live Translation, and an IP57 rating. AirPods 4 has none of the health hardware: no heart rate sensor, no clinical Hearing Aid mode. Both share the H2 chip, so Siri, call quality and the core sound pipeline are close, but the Pro is doing things the 4 simply cannot, which is why it sits next to fitness wearables in our Fitbit Air coverage rather than just other earbuds.

AirPods Pro 3 vs AirPods 4: battery and price

Battery is a clear Pro win. AirPods Pro 3 quote up to eight hours of listening with ANC on a single charge and up to 24 hours with the case. AirPods 4 manage up to five hours per charge, dropping to about four with ANC on the noise-cancelling model, and roughly 30 hours total with the case. On price, AirPods 4 at £119 is the cheapest way into current Apple audio, AirPods 4 with ANC at £169 is the awkward middle, and AirPods Pro 3 at £219 is only £50 more than that middle option for a far bigger jump in capability.

Sound, calls and the AirPods Pro 3 vs AirPods 4 ecosystem

Because both pairs share the H2 chip, the AirPods Pro 3 vs AirPods 4 gap on raw call quality and Siri is smaller than the price implies, and AirPods 4 genuinely punches above £119 for podcasts, calls and casual listening. Where the Pro separates itself is bass and dynamics: a sealed tip moves low frequencies an open shell physically cannot, so music and films have weight the AirPods 4 lacks. For spoken-word and all-day wear, AirPods 4 is closer than Apple would like to admit.

Ecosystem behaviour is identical across the AirPods Pro 3 vs AirPods 4 pairing: instant pairing, automatic switching, Find My and Personalised Spatial Audio all work the same. That is the trap. It makes AirPods 4 feel like a smaller compromise than it is, until the first long flight or gym session reminds you what the sealed Pro tips and ANC were for. Decide on fit and use case, not on the shared software gloss.

Which should UK buyers actually buy

For most people the AirPods Pro 3 vs AirPods 4 verdict is simple: buy the AirPods Pro 3. At £219 it is the only one of the two that does serious noise cancelling, heart rate and the Hearing Aid feature, and it is just £50 above the AirPods 4 with ANC that does far less. Buy AirPods 4 only if sealed tips genuinely bother you, in which case the £169 ANC model is the pick and the £119 version is the budget floor. If you are cross-shopping outside Apple, our best wireless earbuds under £150 and the Nothing Ear open are the rivals worth a look.

The open-ear crowd is real and growing, and Apple deserves credit for putting ANC into that shape at all, the same shift we tracked with the Bose Lifestyle range. But credit is not the same as a recommendation. In the AirPods Pro 3 vs AirPods 4 fight, the Pro wins on noise, health, battery and value-per-pound, and only loses to buyers whose ears veto sealed tips.

MTW verdict

AirPods Pro 3 wins this comparison decisively for UK buyers: at £219 it out-cancels, out-lasts and out-features AirPods 4, and is only £50 above the AirPods 4 with ANC. The single exception is fit. If sealed tips are a dealbreaker for you, buy AirPods 4 with ANC at £169 and accept the trade-offs. Everyone else: AirPods Pro 3.
