The boys over at GSMArena reviewed Samsung’s latest slide-out qwerty based smartphone running Windows Mobile. With it’s vibrant 3.5″ AMOLED screen and speedy 800Mhz OpenGL ES 2.0 CPU (S3C6410) the Omnia Pro is in direct competition with the HTC Touch Pro 2. Will the AMOLED screen and speedy processor make up for the shortfalls of the somewhat messy TouchWiz 2 UI ? Looks like this is the question. Do you want HTC’s amzing TouchFlo UI or a faster CPU and AMOLED screen but with a not so good UI ?

Looks like Gizmodo got their hands on a PowerPoint presentation showcasing and describing in length Microsoft’s future retail stores. Plenty of Surface demo are to be expected, mobility (Windows Mobile & Netbooks) , Windows 7, PCTV (Windows Media Center), XBOX & Zune sections. Interestingly events around the future product launches like Windows 7, project Natal and the mysterious Pink project are planned to take place in the retail stores. LaptopMag got word from a Samsung representavie that the South Korean company is currently working with nVidia on an upcoming Tegra based phone. Not much is said besides this. Will it be Windows Moble or Android based ? Your guess..
Shocking news! Microsoft just proposed the EU commission to add the option to install competitors browsers during the Windows installation. Here’s the Reuters news :
BRUSSELS, July 24 (Reuters) – Microsoft (MSFT.O) has offered to let users choose their own browser and provide more interoperability information to third parties in a bid to resolve two antitrust cases, EU regulators said on Friday.
The European Commission charged the U.S. software company on Jan. 15 with seeking to thwart rivals by bundling the company’s Web browser with its Windows PC operating system, thus harming innovation and reducing consumer choice.
And in January last year, the EU executive had launched a probe on a complaint by industry body ECIS alleging that Microsoft had refused to disclose information that would allow third parties to design programmes compatible with its products.
The Commission welcomed both proposals by Microsoft.
It said the browser offer was in line with proposals in its January 2009 charge sheet, the so-called statement of objections, and would be valid for Windows 7, due to be launched in October.
“The proposal recognises the principle that consumers should be given a free and effective choice of Web browser, and sets out a means — the ballot screen — by which Microsoft believes that can be achieved,” the Commission said in a statement.
It said the company also planned to disclose more interoperability information related to Windows and Windows Server.The Commission said it would investigate both proposals before making a decision.
Microsoft has been involved in a long-running dispute with the Commission and has been fined 1.68 billion euros to date for infringing EU antitrust rules. (Reporting by Foo Yun Chee and Bate Felix; Editing by Dale Hudson)

Looks like HP’s latest iPaq offering is in the wild (in Vietnam). Sohoa posted a few pictures of what looks to be a nice Windows Mobile 6.5 competitor to the BlackBerry qwerty smartphones and it looks to be headed to AT&T.

The boys over at Pocketnow got their hands on some (blury) screens of what appears to be the web interface of the upcoming Windows Marketplace for Mobile. As Brandon says the advantage of the web interface over a native app like iTunes is that you can’t connect to it on any PC in the world, buy an app and get the download queued on your phone or just manage you account etc.

Well, it looks like Palm is fighting Apple back. The new WebOS update brings back support for iTunes sync in the current version (8.2.1) among other enhancements.
“Pre” and “business” just got a lot friendlier! Today we released Palm webOS 1.1, which brings several additions to our support for Exchange ActiveSync (EAS), including remote wipe, PIN/password requirements, inactivity timeout, improved certificate handling, and more. In addition to these treats for business users, Version 1.1 also includes a few other goodies for everyone — like support for emoticons in the messaging app, and the ability to set “person reminders” in the contacts app (next time you get a message or phone call from that person, a message pops up showing you a reminder to ask them about their vacation in Maui — cool, huh?). Oh, and one more thing: Palm webOS 1.1 re-enables Palm media sync. That’s right — you once again can have seamless access to your music, photos and videos from the current version of iTunes (8.2.1).

It looks like Steve Ballmer made a surprise keynote during the Windows Mobile session at MGX today. Microsoft’s Global Exchange (MGX) is a conference aimed exclusively at Microsoft’s employee every year. You may have seen some video from past MGX flauting on Youtube, like Balmmer’s famous monkey boy dance. I guess that Steve really needs/wants to boost Micirosft’s Mobile teams after all the bad news/rumors around Windows Mobile latetly!

Just whe you thought Qualcomm’s legal troubles where a thing of the past,here comes the South Korean regulators slapping Qualcomm with a record $208M fine over what it said was abuse of market dominance. THe company was under investigation since 2006 for abusing its dominant position in CDMA mobile phone chips, charging higher royalties for companies that used rival chipsets and favouring customers who used its products by offering rebates.
